Video is a terrible format for revision
A lecture is useful the first time and nearly useless the fifth. You can't skim a video. You can't search it. And when you need one definition from minute 37, you end up dragging the scrubber back and forth hunting for it.
Text fixes all three problems at once: it's skimmable, searchable, and quotable. So the goal isn't to watch harder or faster. It's to stop treating the video as your study material. The video is the source. Your notes are the material.
The four-pass method
Every step has one job, and each one shrinks the material while making it more useful.

Most people stop after pass 1. Or they paste a transcript into an AI, get a summary, and call it notes. The learning happens in passes 3 and 4.
Pass 1: Get the transcript
If the lecture has captions, YouTube's own transcript panel works: open it, and you can copy the text. Be warned that it splits every line with a timestamp, so it pastes as a messy column of numbers and fragments you'll need to clean up.
The bigger problem is that plenty of lectures have no captions at all. That means smaller channels, older uploads, recorded classes and guest lectures. Then the transcript button isn't there, and most transcript tools fail too, because they only copy captions that already exist. That's the gap Scriber fills: it uses the captions when they exist, and transcribes the audio directly when they don't, so you get clean text either way.
One honest caveat before you build anything on top of a transcript: automatic transcription is strong on clear speech and unreliable on proper nouns, technical vocabulary, numbers, and units. Never memorize a formula, a citation, or a statistic straight from a transcript without checking it against the audio.
Pass 2: Cut it down before you write anything
A 50-minute lecture is roughly 7,000 words of transcript. That isn't notes, it's a wall. Before you structure anything, delete aggressively.
Keep:
- Definitions the lecturer states, and especially ones they repeat
- Worked examples, including the method used to get there
- Comparisons: "X differs from Y because…"
- Anything flagged out loud as important
Cut:
- Admin: deadlines, greetings, housekeeping
- Anecdotes that don't carry a concept
- Repetition and thinking-out-loud
Here's the trick that makes this fast: verbal emphasis is the highest-signal thing in a lecture, and it survives in the transcript. Search the text for "important", "exam", "remember", "common mistake", "students always", and "you'll see this again". Those phrases are a shortcut straight to what your lecturer thinks is testable.
Pass 3: Structure notes so you can test yourself
Set the page up in three zones. This is the Cornell layout, and it works because it builds self-testing into the notes themselves.
- Cue column (left): questions and key terms. Prompts only, no answers.
- Notes (right): definitions, steps, worked examples.
- Summary (bottom): the whole lecture in three or four sentences, in your own words.
The reason this beats a plain summary is simple: you can cover the notes column and answer from the cues. A summary can only be re-read. And re-reading is the great trap of revision. It feels like learning because the material feels familiar, but familiarity isn't recall. You don't find out whether you can produce the answer until something forces you to.
Write the cue column yourself, even if you used AI to draft the notes body. Deciding what's worth asking is the part that does the learning.
Pass 4: Turn the notes into questions
Each type of note converts into a specific kind of practice:

Then space them out: same day, two days later, a week later. Spaced recall is boring and unglamorous, and it's the closest thing to a guarantee that the material is still there in three weeks.
A worked example
Say an economics lecture contains this line in the transcript:
"…so if demand is elastic, raising the price actually reduces total revenue — this trips people up every single year."
That one sentence produces all three artifacts:
- Cue: "What happens to total revenue when demand is elastic and price rises?"
- Note:Elastic demand (|E| > 1): price ↑ → quantity falls proportionally more → total revenue falls. Inelastic (|E| < 1): price ↑ → revenue rises.
- Flashcard: front, "Elastic demand, price increase: what happens to revenue?"; back, "Falls, because quantity drops proportionally more than price rises."
Notice what did the work: the lecturer said "this trips people up every single year". That's an exam question announcing itself out loud, and it was sitting in the transcript waiting to be searched for.
The mistakes that cost the most time
- Notes that read like subtitles. If you kept most of the transcript, you haven't made notes. You've reformatted a video.
- Trusting the transcript on names, numbers, and formulas. Check those against the audio before they end up on a flashcard.
- Asking AI for "a summary". You get something bland and re-readable. Ask instead for definitions, worked examples, or the concepts most likely to be tested.
- Building a 400-card deck you never open. Ten to fifteen cards per lecture, reviewed, beats hundreds ignored.
- Stopping at pass 3. Notes you never test are just tidy. Tidy is not the same as learned.
The whole thing in one line
Get the transcript, cut it to the 20% that's examinable, structure it so you can quiz yourself, then actually quiz yourself. The video was never the study material. It was the raw input.
